Cash Claimed!

NC Cash

Did you know that each state treasurer holds unclaimed money for years? Since I currently live in NC, I visited my state treasurer’s site www.nccash.com to see if my husband and I had any unclaimed money.

What is Unclaimed Property?

Unclaimed property consists of bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, bonds, and contents of safe deposit boxes that typically have been abandoned for one to five years.

Funds become unclaimed because the company loses track of the consumer, due to an incorrect address or other missing information.  By law, these funds are escheated, or turned over, to the Department of State Treasurer for safekeeping until claimed.
I honestly didn’t have high hopes but I was very pleased to find that both he and I had unclaimed money from a doctor and insurance company from years back. Went through the claim process online (looked in NC then other states I’ve lived in), found that we both had money still owed to us, they verified my information, and then received an email for confirmation stating that a check for the unclaimed money would arrive within 30 days if there were no questions.

1 week later, one of the checks was in our mailbox! Woot Woot!

If you haven’t already, I suggest you check out your state treasurer office for any unclaimed money owed to you.
